Scammers impersonate the Chinese Consulate

Have you gotten a call from someone saying they’re from a Chinese Consulate office? But it’s not a Chinese Consulate office calling. It’s a scammer.

The scammer seems to be reaching people via phone and communicates in Mandarin, says they have intercepted a parcel, with the victim’s name and address on it, containing multiple fake passports. They also may instead claim their victim’s bank account is compromised and has been used for criminal activities, threatening them with deportation and/or arrest unless they pay large sums of money.

"您好,这里是中国驻美总领事馆.您有一封重要通知书尚未领取.将在今天限制出入境.如需咨询请按1.

Translation: Hello, this is the Chinese Consulate General. You have an important notice which you have not yet received. Today, migration will be limited. If you need advice, please press 1."

"Received two calls this morning. Pretended to be from Chinese Consulate of Los Angeles. Claiming that I have an important package that needed to be picked up at the end of the day. Pressed 2 and spoke with Mandarin-speaking customer service representative whom asks for name, date of birth, address, social security number, and credit/debit card information for verification and processing. Do not give out information to these scumbag scammers!"

"Spam voice recording message in Mandarin. Claiming to be calling from Chinese Consulate about an important document that has not been picked up."

Protect yourself tips

Neither the real Chinese Consulates, nor the Chinese Embassy, will ever call you to ask for money. Never send money to anyone who calls and asks you to send it.

If you get cold called by someone making threats about arrest or deportation in relation to fake passports, it is a scam. Do not send them any money.

If you get a call or message like this, hang up or delete it, and then tell the FTC.
