Scam alert on the HMRC tax refund process

Fraudsters are sending scam emails and SMS-messages that promise tax rebates to trick people into disclosing their account and personal details.

Fraudsters are sending scam emails and SMS-messages that promise tax rebates to trick people into disclosing their account and personal details.

Treasury Minister, Mel Stride MP, the Financial Secretary to the Treasury said: “HMRC only informs you about tax refunds through the post or through your pay via your employer. All emails, text messages, or voicemail messages saying you have a tax refund are a scam. Do not click on any links in these messages and forward them to HMRC’s phishing email address and phone number.

We know that criminals will try and use events like the end of the financial year, the self-assessment deadline, and the issuing of tax refunds to target the public and attempt to get them to reveal their personal data. It is important to be alert to the danger.”



Called and claimed that I have a tax refund from HMRC of £400.00 from a miscalculated tax. When he demanded my 16-digit card number in order to do the transfer......

Got a voicemessage purpotedly from HMRC, saying this was confirmed when they told me they had a £416 refund for me and asked for a Visa number to make the refund....Complete scam!

I received a text today purportedly from HMRC, saying I am eligible to receive a tax refund of 330, giving a link to click to receive the tax refund. When I click the link, it took me to a page which looks exactly like that of HMRC...

Do not click on any links in these messages.

Take action - forward suspicious emails claiming to be from HMRC to [email protected] and texts to 60599, or contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 to report any suspicious calls or use its online fraud reporting tool
